Who turns on the stars at night?

Nobody is actually turning the stars on at night and off during the daytime.

The stars are always in the sky, but we cannot see them during the day.

Because the sun’s light is so bright,

it makes it impossible to see less bright, far away objects in the sky.

These objects – other planets and stars —

can usually only be seen at night when the sun’s light doesn’t outshine them.

Sometimes we can see the moon during the day,

because it is much closer and reflects the light from the sun back at us.

Try it out: WATCH THE STARS COME OUT

Right when it begins to get dark outside, watch the sky for appearing stars.

As the sun goes down, the sky gets darker, and the starts become visible, starting with the brightest ones. Many of the stars we can see have names, or are part of groups called constellations.

Do you know the names of any of them?

Can you find them?
