WHY DO WE HAVE TEN LITTLE TOES?
Why do our feet have ten little toes?
You might think that your toes aren’t very useful.
After all, you can’t write with them, or use sign language, or use them to pick up heavy things.
We typically use our fingers for all of those things.
The truth is, we need our toes for balance.
When we stand, our toes are working hard to keep us upright.
When we walk, our toes are in contact with the ground for 75% of the time.
And when running, our toes serve to increase the overall length of our foot while providing extra propulsion. Let’s see fingers try any of that!
See for yourself: WALK WITHOUT TOES
In a fairly wide open area (so you don’t crash into anything!), try to walk around on just your heels. It’s a lot harder to keep your balance, isn’t it?
Ten cheers for ten toes!
