WHAT ARE CLOUDS? AND WHY DOES IT RAIN?
What are clouds and why does it rain?
There are always tiny droplets of water vapor in the air around us.
When there are a lot of these water droplets,
they group together to form the clouds we see up in the sky.
The more droplets that are packed into a cloud, the heavier and darker the cloud becomes, until finally gravity takes over and causes the droplets to fall down as rain.
When the rain is over and the sun comes out, it heats the water that has fallen, causing it to evaporate back into the air… starting the whole cycle over again!
See for yourself: MAKE IT RAIN!
With a clear glass or jar, some shaving foam, and a little food coloring you can create a raining cloud!
-
Fill your clear glass or jar with water, almost all the way up to the top.
-
Use the shaving foam to add a cloud layer on top of the water.
-
Little by little, drop a few drops of the food coloring onto the shaving foam.
When the droplets get too heavy for your cloud, gravity will make them “rain down” just like real rain… except you won’t need your umbrella for this storm!
