HOW DO FIREFLIES CARRY THEIR LIGHT?
Light that is produced by a living organism – like fireflies – is called bioluminescence.
Bioluminescence is created by a chemical reaction inside the body
of the living organism that causes them to light up.
Fireflies are nocturnal insects; they rest during the day and are active at night,
when they flash their lights to communicate with each other in the dark.
Just as every person has a unique voice that is only theirs, fireflies have patterns and frequencies of flashing their lights that is unique to each one. Scientists have studied different species of fireflies all over North America, and they have been able to map out and identify some of the different flash patterns.
Maybe one day we will even be able to “talk” with fireflies using their language!
